The San Diego Padres came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 6 to
5.
San Diego came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2
runs on 4 hits. Tim Flannery kicked off the action when he slapped a
one-base hit. John Kruk stepped up next and he delivered a base-hit. After
an out was recorded, Tony Gwynn came up and he slapped a single. Kevin
McReynolds followed and he would hit into a force play. Bip Roberts stepped
into the box and lashed a single, and an error was also committed. This was
the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 6 times.
Craig Lefferts(4-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. Goose Gossage recorded the save, his 17th. Rick Rhoden(8-7) was
given the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 13 hits and
2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings.
Rhoden was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'
