The San Diego Padres came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 6 to
5.

San Diego came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2
runs on 4 hits. Tim Flannery kicked off the action when he slapped a
one-base hit. John Kruk stepped up next and he delivered a base-hit. After
an out was recorded, Tony Gwynn came up and he slapped a single. Kevin
McReynolds followed and he would hit into a force play. Bip Roberts stepped
into the box and lashed a single, and an error was also committed. This was
the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 6 times.

Craig Lefferts(4-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. Goose Gossage recorded the save, his 17th. Rick Rhoden(8-7) was
given the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 13 hits and
2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings.

Rhoden was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

Bonds homers in 2nd straight game

Barry Bonds has started to find his groove against major league pitching, as he homered for the 2nd straight night at Fulton County Stadium. Bonds hit a one-out blast in the third inning off of Rick Mahler. He also added a double in the 8th. Once again, Bonds' power display was not enough for the Pirates, as they fell 9-4.

Bonds slams first career HR in loss to Braves

Barry Bonds hit his first career homerun with one out in the 7th inning off of Craig McMurtry. Unfortunately, that was not enough for the Bucs as they fell the Bravos by a score of 14-3. Bonds also knocked a double off the wall to lead off the game. Strangely enough, Bonds' first HR in real life was off of McMurtry.

The Atlanta Braves batters feasted on the Pittsburgh Pirates pitching at
Fulton Co Stadium. The final score was a lop-sided 14 to 3.

Atlanta took the lead off Rick Reuschel in the first inning when they tallied
5 runs on 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for David
Palmer(3-5) and Atlanta. That was all the run support Palmer required.
Atlanta had 14 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 10.

Palmer got help from Craig McMurtry who was credited with his 2nd save.
Reuschel(3-3) absorbed the loss. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of an
inning.

Bonds makes debut

Frustrated by lack of production from their centerfielders, the Pirates called up their top prospect, Barry Bonds, and promptly put him in the lineup batting leadoff. Bonds went 0 for 5 against Orel Hershiser, but hit the ball hard a couple of times, and it looks as if the Pirates will let him work through any learning curve.
